About Palermo

Palermo is the chief town and port of Sicily, at the bottom of a wide bay enclosed to the south by Capo Zafferano and to the north by Mount Pellegrino. Goethe described it as “the most beautiful promontory in the world”. When you first arrive, it is difficult to understand why Palermo has been celebrated as an extraordinary cultural crossroads; crumbling palaces and chaotic traffic greet the eye. But the city has a fascinating history - settled by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC, it changed hands (like the rest of the island) many times. In the 10th century, under Arab rule, it was the world's second largest city (after Constantinople) and a multicultural metropolis; two centuries later, the Normans had made it one of Europe's most magnificent cities. So be patient and set out to discover the city without preconceived ideas.
